The Story

A stunning example of a 1966 Fender Coronado II, finished in its original vibrant three-tone sunburst over a fully maple hollow body with a single-piece maple neck and bound rosewood fingerboard. All original and in outstanding condition, this is about as clean a Coronado as you’re likely to find, right down to its gleaming chrome hardware and original orange-lined hard case.
Condition throughout is excellent with only the lightest signs of use. The finish remains rich and unfaded, showing off the sunburst beautifully, and the hardware has retained its shine with minimal tarnish. It’s a true survivor from the mid-’60s, clearly well cared for, and presents as one of the best examples we’ve handled.
In the hand, the chunky C profile neck is comfortable and supportive, with a nice rounded feel that’s never restrictive. Acoustically, the guitar is surprisingly loud and resonant. Plugged in, it offers a wide tonal palette: the bridge pickup has a lively, pokey character with sparkling attack that remains sweet and musical, never brittle. The neck pickup is warm, smooth, and beautifully balanced, while the middle position gives a lush blend that’s versatile and dynamic.
The Coronado II sits as one of the more overlooked Fender creations of the CBS era. Designed by Roger Rossmeisl, who had previously worked at Rickenbacker, it was Fender’s bold entry into the hollowbody market. While production only lasted a handful of years due to poor initial reception, their distinctive design and tone have gained a cult following among players and collectors, and we feel these are excellent sleepers in the vintage guitar world! This ’66 example, in such superb condition, makes a compelling case for the Coronado’s charms - both as a player’s guitar and as a collectible piece of Fender history.
