1972 Gibson ES-335TD, Sunburst

A superb 1972 Gibson ES-335 TD, finished in a beautifully unfaded Sunburst finish and presented in fantastic overall condition.

By the early 1970s, the ES-335 had firmly established itself as one of Gibson’s most versatile and enduring designs, equally at home covering blues, rock, country, jazz and just about everything in between. This example captures that familiar semi-hollow magic perfectly, with a lively, rootsy acoustic response and the punch, warmth and bite of its original Patent Number humbuckers.

The finish is a real highlight. The Sunburst remains strong and vibrant, with very little fading and only the lightest signs of age. Overall the guitar presents exceptionally well for a 54 year old example with the chrome hardware also in excellent condition, with very little wear to the plating.

The slim neck is in great shape and feels comfortable and familiar in the hand, with easy upper fret access as you would expect from an ES-335. It has been refretted, and the work has left the guitar playing beautifully. Nut width measures 40.1mm, with a neck depth of 20.8mm at the 1st fret and 24.1mm at the 12th fret.

Electrically, everything looks correct, with a pair of unopened Patent Number sticker humbuckers reading 7.43k at the bridge and 7.48k at the neck. They are nicely balanced and deliver exactly what you want from a good 335: clear, warm and articulate, with plenty of chime and bite when pushed.
